Empowering Youth Through Special Care
The young person's name and identifying details have been changed to protect his privacy.
Fourteen-year-old Liam wanted to make friends and take part in activities outside home, but unfamiliar environments and communication challenges often made participation difficult. His family wanted support that focused on his abilities and interests.
The challenge
Busy settings could quickly become overwhelming, and previous group activities had moved too fast for Liam to feel included. This affected his confidence and made his family hesitant to try new programs.
Our approach
We started with Liam's interest in art and technology. His support worker used short, predictable sessions to practise communication and planning, then gradually introduced a small community art group with clear preparation before every visit.
- Interest-led skill building
- Preparation for new environments
- Communication practice
- Family-led goal reviews
The outcome
Liam now attends the group regularly, greets other participants independently and shares his projects with growing confidence. His family has also gained practical strategies for preparing for change and supporting positive social experiences.
“He is proud to show us what he has made. More importantly, he feels that he belongs somewhere outside home and school.”
